Why Ultrasonic Acoustic Imaging?

Gas leaks generate ultrasonic sound (typically above 20 kHz) due to turbulence when gas escapes from a higher-pressure region through a small opening.

Where the WA-EUS-750 acoustic imager fits

An acoustic imaging camera answers a different question from a handheld detector. A detector tells you that you are near a leak. The WA-EUS-750 shows you the leak as a coloured overlay on a live image of the pipework in front of you, from a distance, while the plant is running.

That changes what a survey costs in time. Pipework at height, congested runs above machinery, and long distribution mains are the places where a handheld instrument is slow and a ladder is involved. With an imager they are scanned from the floor.

When imaging beats a handheld detector

The reporting advantage is underrated. Most leak repair budgets are lost in the gap between the technician who found the leak and the manager who signs off the work. An image of the leak, next to a rupee figure from the leak cost calculator, closes that gap faster than anything else we have seen.

Using it on a survey

  • Scan systematically, not opportunistically. Work the distribution system in sections and record which sections are done, or you will survey the busy areas twice and the far corners never.
  • Survey during production at normal system pressure. Leak signal strength depends on differential pressure, so a survey at reduced pressure understates the problem.
  • Capture the image at the moment you find it. Re-locating a leak to photograph it later doubles the work.
  • Re-survey after repairs. The same tool that found the leak proves it is gone, which is what makes the savings defensible.

Frequently asked questions

What is an acoustic imaging camera?

An array of ultrasonic microphones combined with a camera. The array works out the direction each ultrasonic sound is arriving from and overlays it as a colour map on the live image, so a leak appears as a bright spot on a picture of the pipe it is coming from.

How far away can it detect a leak?

Range depends on leak size, line pressure and how much competing ultrasound is present, so any single figure would be misleading. Larger leaks at higher pressure are detected from considerably further than pinholes at low pressure. Tell us your plant layout and typical pressure and we will advise realistically.

Does it work in a noisy plant?

Yes. Machinery noise is overwhelmingly below 20 kHz and the leak signal is above it, which is why ultrasonic methods are used during production rather than during shutdowns.

Can it find leaks in gases other than compressed air?

Yes, for any pressurised gas escaping through a small opening, including nitrogen and other inert gas systems.

Should we buy one or have WiseAir survey the plant?

If you will survey more than once or twice a year, owning the instrument usually works out cheaper and means you can verify repairs immediately. If you want a costed report and a baseline first, start with a compressed air audit and decide afterwards.
